The iphone 14 Emergency SOS feature has been enabled in US and Canada via satellite feature. Similarly, the feature will be enabled next month in Europe as well including France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK.Â
The satellite SOS feature is an important emergency feature for those users even without any access to cell or Wi-Fi connectivity. The feature might come in handy in remote areas, accidental zones, or other unfortunate emergency periods.
How the feature works:
The feature works by answering questions with vital information including what kind of emergency is it, how many people need help, and additional details. These will be transmitted directly to emergency services that can receive text. If not one of Apple’s centers will make a call on your behalf for those that don’t.
You may send and receive additional messages to clarify the situation and help rescuers. Because satellite data is low bandwidth, Apple developed a compression that squeezes text by 300%. The phone needs around 15 seconds to transmit a message (more if there isn’t a clear view of the sky).
Besides the questionnaire, the iPhone can also transmit your Medial ID, if you have that setup. This describes various health conditions you have so that the first responder will be aware of any potential issues (e.g. allergies to certain medications). Also, you can have up to 10 iMessage emergency contacts, who will receive a transcript of your emergency message that is sent out over satellite to keep them apprised of the situation.
The iPhone 14 satellite feature is free of cost for two years. Similarly, the satellite feature works only on iOS 16.1 or later and might not work above 62° latitude.
