AMD had recently announced their new Ryzen 6000 series, lineup processors. In the announcement, they had given a small hint on the Ryzen 7000 series being a desktop chip. Not after very long, AMD has teased about their next-generation 5nm Ryzen 7000 desktop chips.
The new processor uses a new LGA (land grid array) socket design and seems to feature pins on all sides visible from the top of the CPU. This will be the first time AMD switches to an LGA type socket, after using PGA for the past few generations of Ryzen.
That also means these new processors won’t work with existing motherboards, but that’s to be expected at this point. All of the Zen cores so far have been built for the AM4 platform, which started back in 2017. That’s already a long time to support the same platform, so it’s not surprising to see AMD moving on to a new design now. The Ryzen 7000 processors will launch alongside the new AM5 platform in the second half of the year.
Ryzen 7 5800X3D
While the 7000 series will take some time to launch, in the meantime, AMD has announced the launch date of the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D. It is considered the first gaming CPU with 3D Stacking tech. That allows for a roughly 15 percent boost in gaming performance compared to the Ryzen 5900X.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D has eight cores, 16 threads, a 3.4 GHz base speed with up to 4.5GHz boosted speeds, a 105W TDP, and is compatible with both AMD’s 400 series and 500 series motherboards with AM4 sockets. Unlike the upcoming Ryzen 7000 chips, it’s still on the 7nm node, however, and uses the existing Zen 3 architecture. It’ll ship later this spring, although AMD has yet to announce a price.
