Nepalese travelers visiting India now have the opportunity to obtain Indian SIM cards, marking a significant shift from previous restrictions. The Ministry of Communications of India recently announced that Nepalese citizens can acquire SIM cards upon their arrival in India, provided they present valid government identification. In this article, we shall learn more about Indian SIM cards for Nepalese citizens.

Indian SIM cards for Nepalese citizens:

The decision, outlined in a notice issued by the Ministry, highlights the easing of regulations for Nepalese citizens traveling to India. According to the announcement, Nepalese travelers only need to present proof of citizenship or specific eligible documents to obtain an Indian SIM card. These documents include a government-issued citizenship certificate, a Voter ID issued by the Election Commission of Nepal, or a limited validity photo-ID certificate issued by the embassy.

Dr. Shankar Prasad Sharma, Nepal’s current ambassador to India, confirmed the new policy through his social media platform. This initiative comes as part of recent amendments to India’s Know Your Customer (KYC) policies, streamlining the process for Nepalese citizens to access local communication services during their visit.

However, the Ministry of Communications has imposed certain restrictions on the use of these SIM cards. While travelers can obtain SIM cards upon arrival, the cards will only remain valid for three months, even if the visitor’s stay in India exceeds this duration. Additionally, the Ministry has explicitly stated that these SIM cards will not support roaming capabilities, limiting their usage exclusively within India.

Overall, this move marks a significant step forward in facilitating communication for Nepalese travelers visiting India, streamlining the process of acquiring local SIM cards, and enhancing their overall experience during their stay.
