Microsoft Surface Duo 2 announced with latest Processor, Upgraded camera and 90Hz Display

Microsoft announced the launch of its new dual-screen Surface Duo 2 on September 22, 2021. After the launch of the first Surface Duo, Microsoft had to face many criticisms. Nevertheless, with the new Surface Duo 2 and many major upgrades to the device, Microsoft seems to have taken the criticisms constructively. From display to software and hardware, we can see some major upgrades in the entire device. Most importantly, Microsoft has highly upgraded the device along with its screen size, but with a reduced weight of just 284g.

Design and Display

The design of Surface Duo 2, when folded, gives us the vibes of smartphones that were available few years back with its wide bezels that house the selfie camera. Nevertheless, as you unfold the device, you can see the magic happen. Microsoft has joined the screens with a hinge, which is a bit divergent compared to other foldable smartphones in the market. Microsoft has made some major upgrades to the size and display quality reducing the weight of the device.

Talking about the display, Microsoft has increased the size of the display from 5.6 inches to 5.8 inches. The dual display while combined becomes an 8.3 inches display with a resolution of 1892 x 2688 pixels.  The individual display has a resolution of 1892 x 1344 pixels and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, which Corning claims to be the strongest Gorilla glass yet. Moreover, each screen has a 90Hz refresh rate along with 800 nits of peak brightness.

As the inner edge of the displays is curved, the curves are visible from the outside when the device is folded. Also, the curve can help you keep track of your notifications and calls. Surface Duo 2, furthermore, supports the new Surface Slim Pen 2 along with other generations of Surface Slim Pen that can be magnetically attached to the outside of the device to charge.

Performance

Microsoft has upgraded the performance- software, and hardware of the new Duo 2 compared to its predecessor. The new Surface Duo 2 runs on Android 11. With its astounding software, you can open two apps side-by-side. Under the hood, the Duo 2 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. The new chipset comes with an integrated 5G modem while the predecessor supports a total of 18 5G bands.

As for the graphics, it is handled by Adreno 660. The Duo 2 is coupled with 8GB RAM. Moreover, the Duo 2 is available in 3 different storage configurations- 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

Camera

Moving on to the camera, Microsoft has made some major upgrades to its camera after receiving many criticisms from the customers on the single-camera of the original surface duo. So, the new Duo 2 flaunts a 12MP primary camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), 16MP ultrawide lens, and a 12MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and OIS. From the rear camera, you can record videos up to 4K @ 60fps or up to 1080p @ 240fps.

Moreover, unlike the original Surface Duo, Duo 2 has its designated selfie camera at the front. The Duo 2 sports a 12MP selfie camera housed inside the bezels of the device.

Battery & Other Features

Microsoft has upgraded the battery from 3577mAh as well. Surface Duo 2 is packed with a 4,449mAh with fast charging support of 25W. However, you will have to buy the charger separately. This time Microsoft must have improved the software too, which was not so well optimized last time. The Surface Duo 2 runs on Android 11 with Microsoft’s custom skin on top. For connectivity, we have 5G, Dual Band Wifi, and Bluetooth 5.1. 

Surface Duo 2- Price in Nepal and Availability

The Surface Duo 2 has been officially announced and is available for pre-order at the price of USD 1500. Surface Duo 2 will be officially available from October 21. The device will be available in two different colors- Glacier and Obsidian.

Microsoft has not launched any Surface products in Nepal. Nevertheless, if it launches in Nepal, the expected price in Microsoft Surface Duo in Nepal is Rs.200,000 for the 8/128GB variant, and the price of the 8/512GB variant is Rs.240,000 (expected).
