Recent reports suggest that OpenAI, a prominent AI startup, might be shifting its focus towards developing a search engine instead of releasing its next flagship model. This strategic move is possibly aimed at overshadowing Google’s upcoming annual developer conference, Google I/O, scheduled for May 14th.
In line with this claim, Jimmy Apples shared a log file on Pastebin suggesting the existence of a subdomain named “search.chatgpt.com,” hinting at the development of a search engine by OpenAI. However, he also cautioned against reading too much into it, suggesting that it might not be significant. Currently, accessing this subdomain only yields a “Not found” message, providing little insight into its purpose.
Further investigation revealed that the SSL certificate for “search.chatgpt.com” was issued on April 25, 2024, and is set to expire on July 24, 2024. Additionally, a search on Google confirmed that “search.chatgpt.com” is indexed by Google, although it does not appear in the indexes of Bing or DuckDuckGo.
Earlier this year, in February, The Information reported that OpenAI was working on a web search product intended to challenge Google’s dominance. According to the report, this search product would be powered, at least in part, by Bing. It was suggested that the motivation behind this move stemmed from observations that some users were utilizing ChatGPT in a manner similar to a search engine, prompting OpenAI to explore the possibility of creating a Google Search alternative.
