Qualcomm is a known company to manufacture powerful chipsets for smartphones while it also manufactures quick charge since 2013 with the first release of quick charge 1.0. Qualcomm announces new quick charge 5 which is a massive jump from quick charge 4+. It seems that Qualcomm wants to re-own the title of a quick charging king with the introduction of this quick charge 5.

With support for more than 100W+ charging power, Qualcomm quick charge 5 is the charging platform which charges the battery of 4500mAh from 0% to 50% in just 5 minutes while for full charge it takes around 15 minutes.

This new technology also extends the battery life of the user’s smartphone using Qualcomm battery saver and Qualcomm new smart identification of adapter capabilities technology. Quick charge 5 is 70% more efficient than the quick charge 4 and is 10 times better power delivery than quick charge 1. Quick charge 5 maintains the standard by charging a battery 4 times faster than the previous versions. This technology supports 2S batteries and 20v of power delivery.

Every phone has a charge controller chip inside of it which won’t trust the charger using the PD protocol. It checks the maximum amount of current that it can pass through keeping the temperature of the battery as low as it can. Quick charge 5 is supposed to support 3.3 to 20 volts of minimum output voltage, 3.3 or 5 amps, or 5+ more amps keeping the battery 10°C cooler.

Two charge controller chips are introduced that manufacturers can use which are SMB1396 and MSB1398. Quick charge 5 is expected to be seen in smartphones in Q3 of 2020 this year. As the chipset needs to be matched with one of these new SMB chips, older chipset than snapdragon 865 can’t support this technology. Thus, smartphones using snapdragon 865 or 865+ or newer can have support for this technology. We’ll be soon experiencing this new technology in Q3 of this year.
