As things have started to get normal, we have seen a huge boost over the launch of new  Smartphones everywhere around the world. Similarly, we have seen various smartphone launches here in Nepal too. The company has started to take the Nepali market seriously, the result of this we are seeing great competition among them. This is benefiting us as a consumer.

Recently Xiaomi launched their Redmi 9 series of devices and with few days we got a device with similar pricing from Oppo here in Nepal. Oppo has launched its Oppo A12 with the starting pricing of 18,590. Between both, Oppo is a bit expensive than the Redmi 9. Today we will be comparing both the devices along with their pros and cons.

Design & Display

Talking about the design and display of both the devices, it’s just like any other smartphone under 20K, here in Nepal. We get a Gorilla Glass 3 front with a plastic frame and a plastic back in both the devices. At the bottom, we get a Type C port on the Redmi 9 whereas a Micro USB on the Oppo side. Both of the devices have a waterdrop notch at the front.  With Redmi 9 we get a 6.53-inch FHD+ display which is far better than the HD+ 6.22 inch display found on Oppo A12. Here, Redmi has a clear lead with a larger and better high-resolution display.

Performance & Software

Redmi 9 packs a much powerful Helio G80 along with Mali-G52 MC2 GPU. Its a Octa-core CPU with 2×2.0 GHz Cortex-A75 & 6×1.8 GHz Cortex-A55 configuration. Comparing it with Helio P35 found in Oppo A12, Redmi is a clear winner here. The Helio P35 is an entry-level SoC with  4×2.35 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 configuration and for GPU side of things, we get PowerVR GE8320.

Both devices comes with 3GB or 4GB RAM options but Redmi 9 has LPDDR4X RAM whereas Oppo A12 features LPDDR3 RAM. With Helio G80 on Redmi 9, you will be getting the best performance possible under the 20K price bracket here in Nepal.

While talking about the software we get ColorOS 6.1 with Android 9 on Oppo A12 and MIUI 12 on top of Android 10 on the Redmi 9. In 2020, we are around the corner of getting the latest Android 11 from google and Oppo A12 still runs on Android 9, which is a bummer for a newly launched device.

Optics

Discussing the cameras on these devices on Redmi 9 we get a  quad-camera setup with 13MP f/2.2 primary camera +8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor, 5MP f/2.4 macro Camera, and 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor.

Whereas at the front we have an 8MP f/2.0 shooter. On the Oppo A12, things are quite different. We get a Dual Camera setup with a 13MP primary camera with f/2.2 aperture and a  2MP depth sensor. While at the front we get a  5MP f/2.0 selfie shooter.

Xiaomi has really done a nice job here providing the versatility with the device at this price point. Having an Ultra-wide lens is a nice add-on as it provides a new perspective. Even in the camera department, Redmi is a clear winner.

Battery

Powering the devices we get a 5020 mAh battery on the Redmi 9. It also supports 18W fast charging with the fast charger provided on the box. This along with a 12nm SoC can easily last a day or two. While on the Oppo A12 we get a 4230mAh battery. I do not support any sort of fast charging can come with a micro USB port. Lasting a full day might not be a problem for Oppo A12, as it only has an HD+ display and has the same 12nm architecture with power-efficient A53 cores.

Pricing

You can get a 3GB+32GB variant of Oppo A12 for Rs.18,590 whereas the higher 4GB+64GB variant is priced at Rs.20,790. While you can get a 3GB+32GB variant of Redmi 9 for Rs.16,999 and 4GB+64GB for Rs.17,999.
